The only thing I might respect in the Halloween one is the issue of not all families being able to afford a costume. Being a parent, you hate the chance of your kid getting a broken heart over something like that, and then the abuse other kids might throw at them for not having a costume. But even that, you can make a costume out of anything. One year I pulled all my hair back, managed to do it so it looked almost normal, and wore all normal "preppy" (talking 20 years ago, excuse the archaic language) type clothes and went as a "typical teen". I spent the day bitching about my parents and best friends.

I tried to resist but couldn't help myself....
Which hair did you pull back, Carl?
I know, I know...it was a long time ago, before it fell out. Like I've got any room to take the piss, lol.

Carl in his penny loafers, sweet!
all you have to do is cut two holes for eyes out of a bed sheet, throw it over your kid, give them a meat cleaver and send them off to school as a homicidal ghost and i don't think any of the kids will make fun of them. at least not that day they won't.
now back on topic, somewhat:
i know a few witches who actually look forward to Halloween. their thinking is that throughout the year, not just at Halloween, they are portrayed as pointy nosed, funny hat (though my one friend always does where funny hats, she just doesn't wear the 'funny' hat) broom riding people. the advantage of Halloween is that people show some interest in witches, witchcraft, ghosts and the sort. (speaking from around here of course, don?t know what happens where you are) local papers run stories on real witches and the practice of witchcraft, the local witchcraft store runs, with much advertisement, an open house inviting the public who wouldn?t normally set foot in there to visit during the Halloween season and even one witch opens her house to the public (certain hours only) during October so that people can witness/take part in (hate to use the term) rituals like candle blessing, card reading, and so on. they see this time of year as their opportunity to educate the public on their believes and debunk the pointy nosed, funny hat (i always tell her about them) broom riding stereotype.
now what we should do is get rid of St. Patrick?s day. I mean come on, all it does is stereotype us Irish as people who drink a lot, get rowdy, drink some more, fall down, get up and drink again. wait, that is what we do, nevermind, St. Patrick?s day can stay.

Just shown that Halloween story to the wife, who IS a witch (but not a Wiccan). She thinks it's fucking pathetic. Most witches/ pagans/ Wiccans/ whatever think it's good that mainstream society celebrates Samhain at all, in whatever guise. Anyway, the "pointy nose/broomstick" stereotype is a historical one, dating back to around the 16th century. Wicca in its modern form dates back to the mid-1950s. Which would you say has had the most impact?

I'm pagan, and I don't see anything wrong with Halloween at all. It's just a bit of fun for the kids, after all... nothing to wet your knickers over.
